Hundreds flock to Shoreline Aquatic Park to take part in Strides for Disability

With the sun just peeking over the horizon, hundreds of walkers and runners waited patiently at the Shoreline Aquatic Park starting line.

The 18th Annual Easterseals Strides for Disability 5K/3K Family Fun Walk kicked off early Saturday morning as community members came together in the spirit of inclusion and to fundraise for Easterseals, a nonprofit organization that provides services for children and adults living with disabilities.

The morning began with a quick introduction from Nic Novicki, Easterseals board member and founder of the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge; actor and comedian Johnny Cardinale; and John Lawson, who sang the national anthem. Before heading over to the starting line, volunteers provided a zumba workout to get everyone’s blood pumping.

“You’ll see me out there on my bike,” Novicki chuckled. “No way am I walking that.”

For those not taking part in either the 3K or 5K walk, the event featured numerous activities including food and smoothie samples, games, and photo booths. Cosplayers dressed as stormtroopers, Captain America, and Captain Marvel made their way around the park for children to take photographs with.
