More than 650 people registered early Saturday morning for the 19th Annual Team Spirit Long Beach Cancer 5K at Rosie’s Dog Beach.
Survivors, friends, families, nurses, doctors, and caregivers — there was no shortage of aid in raising funds for support programs available for patients and families at the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute at Long Beach Medical Center.
Before the race had begun, the $120,000 goal for the year had already been met.
The support continued to roll in as friends and families helped participants raise money through completing the 5K.
“We meet our goal every year thanks to the continued support from all these people,” said Cathy Kopy, Todd Cancer Institute executive director.
After a quick commencement ceremony, runners lined up at the Granada Avenue starting point and took off towards Junipero Beach.
Elliot Ammon, making his way back in 24 minutes, was the first to complete the 5k; he was presented a medal from the Cal State Long Beach Spirit Team.
“This is my favorite event of the year,” said Cindy Gotz, Todd Cancer Institute director of business operations. “The energy is always so high from everyone here.”
